Next up: A Darker Shade of Magic (Darker Shade of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab

I really enjoyed this book. There was some sections that were hard to get through and the book did seem to drag in places but at the same time, I was very invested in the story. Fielding is a master at the art of mystery and she definitely didn’t disappoint with this one!

About the Book:

As a special investigator for a hotshot Miami law firm, Bailey Carpenter is smart, savvy, and fearless. When she’s assigned to spy on a deadbeat dad in the middle of the night, Bailey thinks nothing of the potential dangers, only that she needs to gather evidence. Then she is blindsided—attacked and nearly killed.

Now the firm grip Bailey once had on her life is shaken. Her nightmares merge into her waking hours and she’s unable to venture beyond her front door without panicking. A veritable prisoner in her own home, Bailey is uncertain whom she can trust. But old habits die hard, and soon Bailey finds a new use for her idle binoculars: casually observing from her window neighboring buildings and other people’s lives. This seemingly harmless diversion becomes a guilty pleasure when Bailey fixates on the handsome guy across the street—until she realizes that he is also watching her.Suddenly she must confront the terrifying possibility that he may be the man who shattered her life.

Though crippled by fear, Bailey knows she can’t ignore her suspicions and risk leaving a predator at large. With the police making no headway in solving her case, she’s determined to overcome her terror and reclaim the power she lost by unmasking her attacker and taking him down herself. But it’s a harrowing battle that threatens to wreck Bailey’s credibility, compromise an investigation, and maybe even claim her sanity.

This series is hands down my favourite paranormal series!

I can’t say too much about this book as I don’t want to give away anything and spoil people but this book reduced me to sobbing tears. Such an excellent installment to the series and it’s a great set up to the Legacy series as well as the next book, The Beast. I’ve always been interested in Trez and iAm and I’m glad that we were able to see their story. But if you read this book, have a box of kleenex handy. You will need it!

About the Book:

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice…

This book wasn’t my favourite of the series, it was still an enjoyable installment. I’m getting closer to the end of the series so it’ll be interesting to see how the series winds up.

About the Book:

Dear Reader,

You have undoubtedly picked up this book by mistake, so please put it down. Nobody in their right mind would read this particular book about the lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire on purpose, because each dismal moment of their stay in the village of V.F.D. has been faithfully and dreadfully recorded in these pages. I can think of no single reason why anyone would want to open a book containing such unpleasant matters as migrating crows, an angry mob, a newspaper headline, the arrest of innocent people, the Deluxe Cell, and some very strange hats. It is my solemn and sacred occupation to research each detail of the Baudelaire children’s lives and write them all down, but you may prefer to do some other solemn and sacred thing, such as reading another book instead.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

Coffee Book Tag!

I love book tags and I love coffee so how could I not want to do this tag?!

1. Black: Name a series that’s tough to get into but has hardcore fans.

LOTR

The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have read the first book and have seen all of the movies and while I enjoyed them all, I found the first book hard to get into but once I did, I was sucked in. I need to finish this series soon!

2. Peppermint mocha: Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year.

Harry Potter

Definitely the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. It seems like whenever I get the urge to re-read this series, it’s always around Christmas time. I’m not sure why as Christmas isn’t a focal point of the series.

3. Hot chocolate: What is your favourite children’s book?

Charlotte's Web

There are so many books that I could choose from but if I have to pick just one, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White (and this is despite the fact that one of the main characters is a spider). I love this book so much and I think it’s time for a re-read!

4. Double shot of espresso: Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Red Queen

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard! Oh my goodness, I couldn’t put this book down! If you haven’t read this book, what are you waiting for? Go pick it up!

5. Starbucks: Name a book you see everywhere.

throne of glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Everyone who is into YA fiction has read this book or wants to read this book. I have read the first one and I loved it. I really do need to get on reading the rest of the series.

6. That hipster coffee shop: Name a book that you read before everyone else did.

Outlaner

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I read the first three books a couple of years ago before it the series became as popular it is. I do need to read the rest of the series soon! (Are we sensing a theme yet? XD)

7. Oops! I accidentally got decaf: Name a book you were expecting more from.

Everything I never told you

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. I wanted to like this one more than I did but it just dragged for me. Though to be fair, it could have been a case of reading the wrong book at the wrong time for me.

8. The perfect blend: Name a book or series that was both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying.

Shadow and Bone

The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. There is a little bit of everything for everyone in this series. I would highly recommend this one too.
